FOR IMMEIDATE RELEASE – Belleville, Kansas – September 1, 2013 - For years Jon Thompson has made his way from his Superior, Nebraska home to take his shot at the famed half mile of the Belleville High Banks and each time he went home disappointed. But on this Labor Day weekend he finally put it all together and did so in convincing fashion as he led wire to wire in claiming the National Championship Racing Association of Park City, Kansas presented by Precise Racing Products modified feature finale Sunday night in Belleville, Kansas.
Thompson and Kip Hughes started on the front row for the fifteen lap feature and it was Thompson wasting little time taking the lead as the green flag fell. Third starting Josh Lanterman, Jason McGehee and Hughes looked to give chase but Thompson quickly opened a half stretch lead by lap two.
The leader first entered lapped traffic at the races midway point yet still maintained a huge lead over Lanterman, who was running all alone in the runner up position. Another bout with lapped traffic came into play with just a couple laps left but there was no stopping him on this night as Thompson went on to claim his first career series victory in dominating fashion.
“This is by far the biggest win in my life,” yelled a jubilant Thompson in victory lane. “For years we have come here and we just couldn’t put things together. Tonight the car was set up perfectly and felt like it was on a rail.” The victory was also a popular one as the boisterous crowd cheered for the Nebraska resident as his hometown is just forty miles from the track.
Lanterman, who picked up his first career series victory here back in July, rebounded from a tough DNF one night earlier in Park City to claim a strong second while fifth starting McGehee came home third. Hughes settled for fourth while A.J. Brochu rounded out the top five.
The two heat races for the fourteen car field were won by Thompson and Lanterman.
The next scheduled event for the NCRA modified tour will also close out the 2013 season and will take place on Saturday night, October 12th at 81 Speedway in Park City in a special $1500 to win event. As has been the case the past six years, the battle for the point’s championship will come down to this final event with five drivers all in contention to become 2013 series champion.
